CWE STUDENTS ARE GETTING READY TO JUMP ROPE FOR HEART!!

JRFH packets went home last week. Please review all the information in the packet with your child. Cogburn Woods Elementary continues to be one of the top schools in the state when raising money for the American Heart Association. Also, based on the amount that our school raises, the P.E. department will receive gift certificates to purchase new equipment for our program!

We have been able to purchase hockey/lacrosse equipment as a result of the gift certificates that we have received from the American Heart Association.

All money collected will be due on the day of your child’s JumpRope for Heart celebration, which will take place either on Monday, February 13th or Tuesday, February 14th. All celebrations will be held during your child’s regularly scheduled P.E. time.

FUNDRAISING MADE EASY!!!

Here’s how students can raise money online:

2. Set your fundraising goal
3. Fill out your information (username and password)
4. Click “Complete Registration”
5. To raise $, send emails to friends and family! You can check your page to see the progress made!
6. Make and send SuperHero e-cards or use your Facebook or Twitter account to raise $!

TWO lucky students will be part of this year’s “DREAM TEAM”
This includes: free admission to the ATL HAWKS game (all other tickets are ½ price), high-five players as they run out of the “Tunnel”, AND get the opportunity to help rebound the balls to the players during the pre-game warm up!

*Who wins this? Top Fundraiser for CWE AND those students who raised money for JRFH will be part of a raffle for the other ticket, one name will be drawn…

PIE MR. FRASER IN THE FACE!!

Who wins this? The top fundraiser for each GRADE LEVEL will get to have the chance to throw a pie in Mr. Fraser’s face! We will have an assembly to watch all of the action. Dates/times TBA

JRFH RAFFLE

All students that raise money for JRFH will be entered into a raffle to have a chance to win various prizes (free lunch from Chick Fil A, class pizza party, free yogurt from Menches, etc.) We will begin the raffling prizes the week of February 6 through February 14th on the morning announcements.

TOP CLASS-JRFH

The class with the most PARTICIPATION will win a free lunch from Chick Fil A.

Wow..is it really 2012??!! The P.E. department is looking forward to another fun-filled, but busy semester.

Here is a look ahead at what we will be doing over the next few months (unit dates are tentative and subject to change!).

JANUARY
Basketball Unit- 2 weeks (beginning the week of 1/9)
Dance Unit- (begins 1/26)

Fitness Fun!!!

The beginning of November marked the end of our fitness unit. Students had to identify the three areas of fitness and give examples of exercises that would support each area. We will re-visit fitness again in the spring. Students in grades 4-5 will be participating in the state mandated FITNESSGRAM testing in March. All scores will be reported to the state this year. Parents will also receive a print-out of their child's FITNESSGRAM results. More information to come regarding fitness testing, so stay tuned!!!!

Our main fitness goals for our students are ....1) Emphasize the importance of having/maintaining a healthy level of fitness. 2) Students understand why fitness is important 3) Make FITNESS FUN... so that they will ultimately maintain a healthy level of fitness throughout their lifetime!

One of the main ways that we like to make fitness fun is through the use of our Wii system. The students do such a great job and are actively engaged the entire time! Also, we incorporated yoga into our fitness unit. It is important to note, that we DO NOT talk about the different types of yoga, chanting, etc...We keep it simple...students try to hold different poses as a way of working on both their muscle strength and flexibility.

This month, we finished up our CWE running club with a mile run at Hopewell Middle School.

We recently finished up a 4 week throwing/catching unit with students in all grades K-5. Most units begin with a focus on introducing/breaking down the skill using "teaching cues" that the students will remember when practicing on their own. Once the students were ready, they were able to further practice the skills of throwing/catching through station activities and games.

Upon conclusion of the unit, we assessed the students skills through the following ways:

K/1

Teacher Check list- Underhand Tossing only

2nd

Teacher Check list- Underhand Tossing/Overhand Throw

3rd-5th
Peer Check list- Students assessed each other on underhand tossing and overhand throwing (Teachers monitored assessment to make sure it was being done correctly.)

**All K-2 assessments were sent home. Students were not graded based upon their skill. Assessments are used to give teachers, parents, and students feeback.

Listed below are the "Teaching Cues" that we use when teaching the skills in this unit: Please practice these with your child!!

Underhand Toss- "Tick Tock Goes The Clock" (K-1)
*We have students pretend their arm is like a pendelum on a clock

We had so many great activities going on all throughout the school during our Back To Football Week. Many of our awesome teachers integrated the football theme into their standards-based lesson plans. It was amazing to see the motivation and enthusiasm the kids had for learning the subject matter when the teachers were able to connect it to something they know...in this case...FOOTBALL!!! Here are just a few examples of what was taking place in our classrooms!!

Class: Mrs. Elliott's 3rd Grade
Lesson: Language Arts- 4 Types of Sentences

Mrs. Elliott- Reviewing the 4 Types of Sentences with her class

Explaining the activity- Students will place their "statement" sentences on this goal post

Part I: Students write their 4 sentences on this paper (command, question, exclamation, statement sentences)

The students did a great job of staying on task throughout this activity.

Part II: Students were to copy their sentences from their piece of paper onto 4 different footballs.

Part III: Students had to put their footballs onto the correct field goal post. For example, they had to make sure they put the football that had a command sentence written on it, onto the command goal post.

Wow!

This was FUN!!!!

Mrs. Elliott's class also has been learning about acronyms.

Class: Mrs. Morris's 5th Grade
Lesson: SuperBowl Math

Students were given a math problem.

Class was divided into different teams; they moved 10 yards down the field for every problem that they got correct. The top two teams faced each other in the "SuperBowl".

Students were working hard to figure out the math problem.

Lesson: Football Math Problems

Students were given a football math problem to solve as a group. Once they came up with the answer they were able to throw the football that number of times to everyone in their group.

Lesson: Math- Measurement

Students threw the same type/size of footballs and measured the distance using various criteria: people lying down, yard sticks, and popsicle sticks. Then the students talked about why it took more popsicle sticks to measure the yard sticks.

Mrs. Bowen's class enjoyed a yummy football treat!

GET READY FOR "BACK TO FOOTBALL FRIDAY"

NFL “Back to Football Friday” is a nation-wide celebration that unites fans of all 32 teams to welcome back the NFL football season. Students and staff at CWE are encouraged to wear their favorite NFL team gear and show their NFL team spirit on Friday, September 16th. Our school is registered to win a $10,000 NFL PLAY 60 youth health/wellness grant and an NFL team celebration. Schools are asked to display their NFL spirit, along with great health and wellness habits by completing two essays and submitting photos of their in-school “Back To Football Friday” activities.

Many of our awesome teachers at CWE will be incorporating a football theme into their math, spelling, reading, writing and character education lessons to support our Back To Football Friday celebration. There will even be some “Healthy Food Tailgating” going on during our celebration! Of course, we will be incorporating some football into our throwing lessons in P.E.! The cafeteria staff is having a Healthy Food Recipe contest. 5th grade students submit your recipes now!!!
